The Khyber has a great selection of music and lots of good bands play there. It is small and smoky, and an intimate place to see bands. If the act is too popular however, it can be hard to see them, as the stage isn’t raised very high off the ground. Upstairs used to be free and has dj’s playing a weird assortment of music. Last time I went they were charging for upstairs, which upset me far more than it should have, as it is probably worth a few bucks to go upstairs. There was something great about the freeness of upstairs though, in the midst of all the old city stuff. The upstairs can get crowded very early and has random hours of opening. This is a non-yuppie place in old city, which is a rarity for certain. I always keep it on the radar for times when I’m in old city looking for a drink.
